I think that’s very well said. One of the more thought provoking books I’ve read in recent years is Scale, by Geoffrey West. My one sentence summary is that the behavior of different systems - he focuses on organisms, cities and companies - is determined in large part by what they optimize. Companies optimize for efficiency, not for innovation. They get ruthlessly good at doing what they do and if asked to do something else, the system seizes.
